Introduction
Lords of the Fallen is a game that challenges you to face your sins and redeem yourself in a brutal world where every choice matters. As one of the Dark Crusaders, you must overthrow Adyr, the demon god who rules over the Mournstead, a land plagued by corruption and decay. Along the way, you will encounter fierce enemies, deadly traps, and mysterious secrets. In addition, you will have to select one of the three gods you serve; each has unique powers and spells. Will you follow Orius, the god of light and order, Adyr, the god of chaos and darkness, or Umbral, the god of death and rebirth?
I’ll give you a rundown of all the features in this blog post, including the classes, inferno construction, spells, weapons, updates, and battle system. In addition, I’ll discuss my thoughts on the game. Now let’s get going!
Classes
Lords of the Fallen offers 13 classes to choose from, each with their own strengths and weaknesses. At the start of the game, you can choose from one of the nine pre-installed classes, or you can obtain specific endings to unlock one of the four hidden classes. The default classes are:
- Blackfeather Ranger: A ranged archetype with a bow and an axe. Good for headshots and fire damage.
- Condemned: A masochistic class with a bucket and rocks. Very weak and challenging to play.
- Exiled Stalker: A stealthy class with a dagger and a crossbow. Good for backstabs and poison damage.
- Hallowed Knight: A holy class with a sword and a shield. Good for healing and holy damage.
- Mournstead Infantry: A tanky class with a hammer and a shield. Good for defense and physical damage.
- Orian Preacher: A cleric class with a staff and a mace. Good for healing and holy damage.
- Partisan: A warrior class with a spear and a shield. Good for thrusting and physical damage.
- Pyric Cultist: A pyromancer class with a flail and a catalyst. Good for fire damage and inferno spells.
- Udirangr Warwolf: A berserker class with a sword and an axe. Good for slashing and physical damage.
The secret classes are:
- Dark Crusader: A corrupted class with a greatsword and a catalyst. Good for fire damage and inferno spells.
- Lord: A noble class with a sword and a catalyst. Good for holy damage and radiance spells.
- Putrid Child: A mutated class with a fist weapon and a catalyst. Good for poison damage and umbral spells.
- Radiant Purifier: A divine class with a sword and a catalyst. Good for holy damage and radiance spells.
You can switch your class at any time by using a respec item, which allows you to redistribute your stats and change your spells. However, you cannot change your starting gear, so choose wisely.
Combat System
Lords of the Fallen is a game that rewards skill, strategy, and patience. While there are some distinct twists, the combat system is largely similar to other Soulslike games. When you attack, dodge, block, or sprint, your stamina bar is depleted. You also have a vigor bar that replenishes when you kill enemies or rest at a vestige, which is a checkpoint that also serves as a fast travel point. You can use vigor to heal yourself, cast spells, or perform special attacks.
Three difficulty settings are available in the game: Normal, Hard, and Nightmare. The difficulty affects the enemy’s health, damage, and aggressiveness, as well as the amount of vigor you get from killing them. The game also has a risk-reward system called the Sin Meter, which increases when you kill enemies without resting at a vestige. The higher your Sin Meter, the more loot and experience you get from enemies, but also the more likely you are to encounter invasions from other players or NPCs. Your Sin Meter resets and all of your remaining energy is lost upon death. You can retrieve your lost vigor by returning to your corpse, but if you die again before doing so, you lose it forever.
Spells
Lords of the Fallen has a rich and diverse magic system, with three types of spells: Radiance, Inferno, and Umbral. Each type of spell has six variants, each with different effects and costs. You can equip up to four spells at a time, and switch between them using the directional pad. You can also upgrade your spells by finding and using spell shards, which are rare items that drop from enemies or chests. Upgrading your spells increases their power, duration, or area of effect.
Radiance spells are based on light and order, and are good for healing, buffing, and dealing holy damage. Some examples of Radiance spells are:
- Divine Shield: Creates a shield that absorbs damage and reflects it back to the attacker.
- Holy Light: Throws a projectile that explodes on impact, dealing holy damage and blinding enemies.
- Sacred Ground: Creates a zone that heals you and your allies, and damages and slows enemies.
Based on chaos and fire, inferno spells are useful for strengthening your weapons, dealing fire damage, and causing burn and ignite effects. Some examples of Inferno spells are:
- Firestorm: Unleashes a barrage of fireballs that rain down from the sky, dealing fire damage and igniting enemies.
- Seismic Slam: Slams the ground with your weapon, creating a shockwave that deals fire damage and knocks back enemies.
- Conflagration: Enchants your weapon with fire, increasing its damage and applying burn and ignite effects.
Death and rebirth are the themes of umbral spells, which are useful for controlling the realms, dealing poison damage, and causing wither and decay effects. Some examples of Umbral spells are:
Soul Leech: Drains the life force of an enemy, dealing poison damage and healing you.
Umbral Shift: Switches between the Axiom and Umbral realms, revealing hidden paths and secrets.
Revenant: Summons a spectral ally that fights by your side, and explodes when killed, dealing poison damage and applying wither and decay effects.
Weapons
There is a vast array of weapons in Lords of the Fallen, each with unique stats, movesets, and special attacks. You can find weapons by looting enemies, chests, or secret areas, or by buying them from merchants. You can also upgrade your weapons by using deralium nuggets, which are common items that drop from enemies or chests. Upgrading your weapons increases their damage, scaling, and rune slots.
The game has 10 types of weapons, each with different advantages and disadvantages.
The types of weapons are:
- Daggers: Fast and light weapons that deal low damage, but have high critical chance and poison damage.
- Short Swords: Balanced and versatile weapons that deal moderate damage, and have decent speed and range.
- Long Swords: Powerful and elegant weapons that deal high damage, but have slow speed and high stamina cost.
- Great Swords: Massive and heavy weapons that deal very high damage, but have very slow speed and very high stamina cost.
- Axes: Brutal and savage weapons that deal high damage, and have high slash and fire damage.
- Hammers: Crushing and blunt weapons that deal high damage, and have high thrust and physical damage.
- Spears: Piercing and long weapons that deal moderate damage, and have high range and speed.
- Flails: Flexible and unpredictable weapons that deal moderate damage, and have high stagger and fire damage.
- Polearms: Sweeping and wide weapons that deal moderate damage, and have high reach and speed.
- Fist Weapons: Primitive and improvised weapons that deal low damage, but have very high speed and low stamina cost.
You can also use shields, which are defensive items that allow you to block attacks and parry enemies. Shields have different stats, such as stability, block, and parry, which affect their effectiveness and stamina cost. Shields also have different sizes, such as small, medium, and large, which affect their weight and mobility. You can also use catalysts, which are magical items that allow you to cast spells and perform special attacks. Catalysts have different stats, such as spell power, spell cost, and spell slots, which affect their performance and versatility. Catalysts also have different types, such as staffs, orbs, and hearts, which affect their appearance and movesets.
